Born in Wiarton, Ontario, Laura J Carter studied at the University of Western Ontario and taught for a number of years before beginning a full time career as a painter in 1983. She is a member of the Ontario Society of Artists, the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and the Society of Canadian Artists.

Primarily her media are watercolour and graphite, although much of her work over the last few years is in oils. She takes her inspiration from her travels by canoe along Georgian Bay and Lakes Superior and Huron, from studio grant time spent in Newfoundland and from journeys into the Canadian Arctic. Her work celebrates the haunting beauty of these isolated places, borders between the known and the mysterious.
